PowerPC Challenge: Making Amends For My Cheating Ways

Posted Jun 29, 2017 by Liggysmalls

I have a confession to make, a confession for transgressions I have not yet committed but fully intend to. Taking part in the PowerPC Challenge starting on July 1, 2017 is something I look forward to though I can't help shake the feeling that I am cheating the spirit of the game. In my previous posts I articulated my configuration, a Power Macintosh G5 running Linux rather than an Apple operating system. That's not too terrible, perhaps easily forgivable but this next part is what doesn't feel right. My day to day work revolves around an Intel based Linux system as I have talked about in the past but I left something out, something that is constantly used on my desk and I honestly can't get through my work day without. What is this magical device? Imagine my head hanging in shame here; a Microsoft Surface Pro running Windows 10.

While I am certainly not proud of this tablet like symbol of everything I would like to think I believe in, it's essential to me. A large part of my daily communications are done via Skype and various online conferencing applications like GoToMeeting. These applications are for the most part only available on Windows or what I would consider software I would rather not have on my primary system. I truly wish it didn't have to be this way but these are decisions which I simply can't influence and business must carry on with or without me.

How can I make amends? Is there something I could do to make up for this giant gaping hole of modern (Wintel, ugh) technology I can't possibly live without? I had an idea that I think just might make up for this gross violation of the spirit behind the PowerPC Challenge. Sitting across from my workstation is a machine I have been working on lately to clean up a little, a Power Macintosh G4. What if I could work this system in to my daily routine, would that help? What if I not only used this machine on a daily basis but ran Mac OS 9.2.2 on it exclusively? That seems like it might be just the ticket, it's the kind of thing that would at least make me feel a little better.

OS 9 screenshot inception.

After loading up the universal installer for 9.2.2 from Mac OS 9 Lives! I started to think long and hard about what portion of my daily tasks would be well suited to this environment. With dual 1.0 GHz G4 processors and 1.5 GB of memory this system is no slouch running OS 9, it's honestly pretty quick for most tasks. I spent a few minutes surfing the software available over at Macintosh Garden and that's when the little light bulb went off, this system would be perfectly suited for updating Antechquated.com. Everything I would need is readily available; Macromedia Fireworks for basic photo editing, Interarchy for moving files around and of course a fully functional text editor for writing these blog posts.

I guess that settles it! Starting on July 1, 2017 with my participation in the PowerPC Challenge all of my posts and updates to Antechquated.com will be done from this Power Macintosh G4 running Mac OS 9. Hopefully that makes you feel as warm and fuzzy as it makes me and hopefully you can find it in your heart to forgive my use of a modern Windows system even if I can't.
